ToggleThe winning ticket was discarded at a shop in the town of Bitonto, in Italy’s Puglia region, after a lottery terminal displayed a message indicating it was “not payable.” Believing the ticket held no value, the player left it behind and returned home.
Only later did a family member recognize that the numbers matched the winning combination. According to reports, the player regularly chose the same set of numbers because of their personal significance, prompting an urgent return to the shop. By then, the rubbish had already been collected.
Search Through Tons of Waste
With the ticket already on a refuse truck, local waste management company SANB launched an extensive recovery effort.
Roberto Nicola Toscano, who heads the company, said workers retraced the ticket’s likely route through the waste collection system before identifying the correct garbage truck. Because of the risk of contaminating the waste stream, the vehicle could not simply be emptied at the usual processing site, forcing crews to carefully examine the collected rubbish instead.
The search lasted for roughly two days and involved sifting through more than six tonnes of waste before workers finally located the ticket.
Despite the harsh conditions, the ticket was found intact.
An Emotional Reunion
After the winning ticket was recovered, the anonymous player was informed that it had been found.
Toscano described the discovery as “nothing short of miraculous” and said the winner was overcome with emotion upon hearing the news. According to accounts of the operation, the player had agreed to cover the additional costs associated with the extraordinary recovery effort before the search began.
Why the Confusion Happened
The misunderstanding appears to have stemmed from the way lottery prizes are processed rather than from an invalid ticket.
Reports indicate that smaller lottery retailers cannot pay out jackpots above certain limits. As a result, the terminal displayed a message that the prize could not be redeemed there, which the player mistakenly interpreted as meaning the ticket was not a winner.
Why the Story Matters
The incident highlights the importance of verifying lottery results carefully before discarding a ticket, particularly when prize verification systems display messages that may relate to payment procedures rather than the outcome itself.
It also showcases the unusual efforts of municipal workers, whose persistence transformed what seemed like a devastating mistake into a life-changing recovery.
With the ticket safely recovered, the anonymous winner can now begin the official prize claim process and collect the €1 million jackpot, bringing an unlikely story of luck, human determination and timing to a happy conclusion
