German authorities are investigating a serious security incident after a drone carrying an explosive device was found inside the restricted area of Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe’s busiest cargo hubs. Officials say the discovery represents a significant escalation in the threat posed by unauthorized drones targeting critical infrastructure.
The drone was discovered overnight by an airport employee near the airport’s southern runway, close to Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft stationed at the facility. Bomb disposal specialists were immediately deployed, using a remotely operated robot to examine the device. Investigators safely removed the detonator before carrying out a controlled explosion to eliminate the remaining risk.
Separate Incident Involving Cargo Aircraft
Authorities are also examining a second incident that occurred during the same period. A cargo aircraft struck an unidentified flying object after aborting its landing while runway restrictions were in place. The aircraft later landed safely in Hanover, where inspectors found only minor damage.
Officials have not confirmed whether the object involved in the collision was connected to the explosive drone, and both incidents remain under investigation.
Airport Operations Partly Restored
The discovery temporarily disrupted operations at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Both runways were initially closed while police secured the area and explosive experts assessed the threat.
After the device was neutralized, authorities reopened the airport’s northern runway, allowing flights to resume. The southern runway remained unavailable while investigators continued their work and maintenance activities proceeded. Officials said there was no danger to passengers or airport employees during the response.
Government Describes Incident as a New Threat
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt traveled to the airport following the incident and described the discovery of an explosive-equipped drone as a “new quality of danger.”
While Germany has dealt with repeated reports of unauthorized drone activity around military facilities, airports, logistics centers and other strategic sites, officials said finding a drone carrying explosives inside airport grounds marks a more serious security challenge than previous incidents.
The minister characterized the event as part of a possible hybrid threat but stopped short of identifying any group or country as responsible, saying investigators must first establish the facts.

Officials have not announced any suspects or attributed responsibility, emphasizing that the investigation remains at an early stage.
The case is expected to intensify scrutiny of drone security around airports and other critical infrastructure as German authorities seek to understand how the aircraft entered a protected area and whether additional security measures will be required.
