The annual Allen & Co. conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, is known for attracting some of the world’s most influential executives, investors and political figures. This year’s gathering sparked conversation for an unexpected reason after the event schedule revealed that attendees could sign up for knitting sessions alongside panel discussions and executive meetings.
Often referred to as the “summer camp for billionaires,” the invitation-only event combines business conversations with outdoor recreation and wellness activities. In addition to knitting, the schedule included yoga, Pilates, fly fishing, hiking, mahjong and fitness sessions, reflecting the conference’s long-standing tradition of mixing networking with informal social events.
Industry Leaders Meet Behind Closed Doors
While recreational activities attracted online attention, the conference remained focused on discussions shaping the future of technology, media and finance.
Among this year’s participants were Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts, Citadel founder Ken Griffin and several other prominent executives. Political leaders also appeared on the program, including Pennsylvania Senators John Fetterman and David McCormick, who were scheduled for an on-stage interview moderated by CNN anchor Erin Burnett.
Business sessions featured interviews with industry leaders and conversations about major trends affecting corporate America, particularly the rapid transformation of the media and artificial intelligence sectors. AI has become one of the conference’s dominant themes as companies race to integrate the technology into their products and business models.
Media Industry Faces a Period of Transition
This year’s event also unfolded during a period of significant change for traditional media companies.
Comcast drew particular attention after recently announcing plans to separate its NBCUniversal business from parts of its cable operations, a move widely viewed as an effort to adapt to declining cable television subscriptions and shifting consumer viewing habits. Brian Roberts attended the conference alongside Comcast President Mike Cavanagh, who is expected to play a leading role in the company’s evolving media strategy.
Executives across the industry continue to navigate challenges ranging from streaming competition to changing advertising markets and the growing influence of digital platforms and online creators.

Founded in 1983, the Allen & Co. Sun Valley Conference has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most influential private business gatherings. Unlike many public industry events, the conference operates largely behind closed doors, with no livestreams or open press sessions.
Its informal setting has historically helped foster relationships that later led to major corporate transactions, making the annual retreat closely watched despite the secrecy surrounding its agenda.
Although knitting sessions generated headlines this year, they also underscored the conference’s distinctive format—one that encourages executives to step away from boardrooms while continuing conversations that can shape industries long after the week in Idaho comes to an end.
