Sony Pictures Entertainment is expanding its presence in the fast-growing immersive entertainment market with a $100 million investment in Cosm, a company known for its large-scale “shared-reality” venues that combine cutting-edge visual technology with communal live experiences.
The investment gives Sony a minority ownership position in the El Segundo, California-based company. Industry estimates suggest the transaction values Cosm at roughly $1 billion, following the company’s previous fundraising round in 2024.
The agreement also strengthens the strategic relationship between the two companies, with Sony Pictures Entertainment Chief Executive Ravi Ahuja joining Cosm’s board of directors as part of the investment.
What makes Cosm different?
Cosm operates immersive venues designed to make audiences feel as though they are inside the action rather than simply watching it. Its facilities feature massive wraparound LED dome displays paired with advanced projection and audio technology, creating what the company describes as “shared reality.”
The concept has attracted sports fans through broadcasts of major live events while also expanding into entertainment programming, including immersive presentations of films and special productions. Unlike virtual reality, which is typically experienced alone through a headset, Cosm’s venues are built around large audiences sharing the experience together.
The company currently operates locations in the Los Angeles area, Dallas and Atlanta, with additional venues planned in Detroit and Cleveland as it continues expanding across the United States.

The investment aligns with Sony’s broader strategy of extending its entertainment business beyond traditional movie theaters and streaming platforms.
By partnering with Cosm, Sony gains another way to showcase its film library and other entertainment properties through premium, location-based experiences that are difficult to replicate at home. The move also positions the studio to explore new formats for live sports, concerts and immersive storytelling as audiences increasingly seek experiences that combine technology with in-person entertainment.
Industry analysts have increasingly pointed to experiential entertainment as a growth area for media companies, particularly as conventional cinema attendance continues to face competition from streaming services.
A growing market for immersive venues
Sony’s investment comes as companies across the entertainment sector explore new ways to attract audiences with large-format experiences.
Cosm has already secured partnerships across professional sports and entertainment, using its technology to present live games and immersive productions in venues designed to create a stadium-like atmosphere. The company has also attracted significant investor interest in recent years, raising substantial funding to support its nationwide expansion.
For Sony, the investment represents more than a financial stake. It provides a platform to experiment with new ways of delivering premium entertainment outside the home while supporting the continued growth of a business that blends cinema, sports and live events into a single immersive experience.
As Cosm expands its venue network, the partnership is expected to give Sony additional opportunities to develop exclusive programming and explore new distribution models for its entertainment content, reflecting a broader shift toward experiential media in the years ahead.
